The production process of stone sculptures
Aug 25,2025
Material selection stage
Choose stone based on the sculpture theme: marble is preferred for character sculptures, while granite is commonly used for outdoor monuments.
Check for internal cracks in stone: observe permeability by tapping, splashing water, or using X-ray scanning.
Rough carving
Traditional tools: hammers, chisels, and drills, suitable for fine manual carving (such as Huian stone carving in China).
Modern machinery: angle grinder, pneumatic engraving machine, waterjet cutting to improve efficiency (such as large stone cutting).
3D technology assistance: Generate carving paths through laser scanning or 3D modeling to guide CNC machine tool operations.
Fine carving and polishing
Gradually delve from the surface to the details, using sandpaper and polishing wheels to polish the surface until a mirror or matte finish is achieved.
Special treatment: such as the "wet carving method" for marble sculptures (spraying water during carving to prevent cracking and enhance transparency).
surface treatment
Polishing: Enhance the luster of stone and highlight texture (such as the mirror effect of black granite).
Acid washing: corroding the surface with dilute acid to form an antique texture (such as the aging treatment of sandstone sculptures).
Waxing/coating: protects the stone from contamination, but may affect its natural texture.
